Josie Slaathaug, Cetacean Ecology intern, The Marine Mammal Center, Sausalito CA

Josie Slaathaug (pronounced SlotHowg) joined The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, the largest marine mammal hospital in the world, as a Cetacean Ecology intern in 2023. She's a Master's Student and an NSF Graduate Research Fellow who is working on her masters degree at Sonoma State University in Santa Rosa CA. Her primary role is maintaining the Marine Mammal Center's gray whale photo ID catalog that she created as an intern. As an early career scientist, she aims to investigate potential distributional shifts of cetacean populations driven by climate change and assess population health through examining various factors such as body condition, presence of injury, and evidence of human interaction.

She completed her undergraduate in Boston at Northeastern University, afterwhich she did a year's worth of work doing sea turtle work in Miami for the county government. She also interned with Sarasota Dolphin Research Project in Florida.
